On Reading/Writing

    2006/02/20 - 8:07 p.m.

I feel particularly crappy today. It must be due to that God-awful cold I've got. I even sound like a frog. Urgh. I'm plenty tired, and I've not even started on my work/revision. I've got that monster Lit paper due tomorrow, and I've got to cram for Math/Chinese. Speaking of Chinese, it's 'that time' of my life again. That 'Chinese-hating' phase that I seem to go through every now and then. Now, I'm wishing that I could migrate to Alaska, where there'd better be absolutely nobody speaking a word of Chinese. A life without hearing a single word of Chinese. It sounds pretty ideal to me. =)

I've finished 'a million little pieces'. Thank God. I know that Jolene swears by that book, and lots of people love it even though it's been partially fabricated and the writing is 'wonderful' etc. I just don't particularly care for it. Frey can write, I'll give him that. I simply didn't care for the way 'he' seemed to go on and on angsting away about his issues. Of course the book had it's good points, which I don't feel like listing out right now, but I'm so glad that I've managed to slog through it. Woohoo!

I was just thinking about writing, and it occured to me that i hardly ever write, other than for essays, blogs etc. To me, no matter how gifted at the language you are, writing is a skill honed through practice. That might explain my horrendously sucky writing/language. Last night, while my brain was not functioning properly, I accidentally came up with a word: disallowment. I honestly don't know what I was thinking. That's absolutely dreadful, you know? My excuse: I was extremely sick and tired and doped up on medicine. I bear no responsibility for the sick stuff my brain cooked up while my common sense went on a merry holiday to Toronto. Lucky common sense. I'd give a heck lot to be able to go vacationing in Toronto, or even Perth. (I could visit Jo/my cousins!)

Thinking about writing makes me think about reading. =) I've got such little time for my favorite pastime that I scrounge up reading time while eating my meals. Isn't that pathetic? I remember a time, when I was in P2, I'd bring about 10 or so books to school, and finish them during school hours. I'd also finish another 10 or so after school. That was lower primary. In upper primary, I finished at least one thick book a day. (adult fiction/fantasy that I started reading in p3) I'd bring a new book to school every day, and I went to Borders every Sunday to buy 7 books to last the week. Those were the days when I was really into fantasy/science fiction. Those were the days when I actually had a life. Now, I count myself lucky if I can finish a book within 2 weeks or so. Sometimes three weeks. Bah. I have no life.
